Cadet Anthony Gemma , III was recognized by the head coach of the swimming and diving team, Ryan Campbell, at the 2016-2017 Winter Athletics Awards ceremony this week as the recipient of the Most Valuable Swimmer Award this season. In addition, he was recognized for earning the Most Improved Swimmer Award. He also earned All-State Honors in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay for his performance with the swimming and diving team this season. Gemma started the season as what Coach Campbell called "a decent freestyler," but his times were nowehere near where they needed to be in order to be a significant contributor at the state meet, Campbell said. Gemma worked extremely hard throughout the season, however, and as a result he was able to trim off significant amounts of time in the 50 and 100 Free. This resulted in him winning the 50 Free and placing second in the 100 Free at the state championship meet. In addition, Gemma led the relay team that placed second in both the 400 Free Relay and 200 Free Relay at the state meet, with the 200 Free Relay team achieving an All America Consideration Time. Gemma ended up being a four-time All State performer and led the team in scoring this season. "Anthony had a tremendous year," said head coach Ryan Campbell. "He worked hard and as a result he took significant amounts of time off in several events which had a major impact on the team's results. I am looking forward to working with him in the year to come and seeing what he can do moving forward." Cadet Gemma, a junior, is the son of Anthony and Veronica Gemma of York, Pennsylvania. He has attended Fork Union Military Academy since August 2016 when he enrolled as a junior. |

In addition, he was recognized for earning All-State Honors in the 100 Fly, 200 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay. He also earned NISCA Academic All-America honors for his performance with the swimming and diving team this season. Cadet Khalil, a senior, is the son of Ehab Khalil and Naglaa Bakr of Cairo, Egypt. He has attended Fork Union Military Academy since August 2014 when he enrolled as a sophomore. |
