Online registration is now open for the 2017 Fork Union Basketball Camp to be held on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy from July 9–July 13, 2017 for boys and girls in grades 2 to 12. Registration is available online through Eventbrite at this link.

Fork Union Basketball School was established in 1985 under the direction of Coach Fletcher Arritt. Coach Arritt will again be present at this year’s basketball school, but the camp will continue to be under the guidance of Fork Union Postgraduate Basketball Coach Matt Donohue. Over the past four decades, more than 200 of FUMA’s players have gone on to play Division I basketball. Throughout Thomas Gymnasium, one can view an impressive display of college jerseys donated by former players. These athletes, along with other well-respected players, are the core of the teaching staff at Fork Union Basketball School.

Experience, success, love of the sport, and enthusiasm; all are reflective of the three-plus decades FUBS has continued to educate campers in the fundamentals of the game. Included with skill instruction is good sportsmanship, social skills and the importance of teamwork. Boarding on the campus of Fork Union Military Academy is available for boys from 2nd to 12th grade. Girls and boys may attend as day campers. We have a full schedule that allows for various ages and skill levels.

The camp is located on the 1,400+ acre campus of Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. FUMA is on Route 15 approximately 18 miles south of Zion Crossroads, 35 miles from Charlottesville, 50 miles from Richmond, and 100 miles from Washington, DC. Campers are housed in the brand new Academy Jacobson Hall dorm staffed by camp counselors and instructors. Meals begin Sunday evening and end with breakfast on Thursday. Day campers may have lunch and dinner.

April News from the Guidance Department

Four down and one to go.  It’s hard to believe that we have just begun the last term of the year.  Final exams for the fourth term were administered yesterday, and today is the first day of class for this final term for our students.

All of the counselors in our Guidance Department are continuing to meet with our assigned cadets to discuss course options for next year.  Early next month we’ll start sending home these requests so that you can review your son’s form and then let us know of any questions or concerns regarding them.

Our “Let’s Talk” series continued this past month with a seminar on “Careers in the Military”.  Retired from the Air Force following a distinguished military career, Col. George Gennin, grandfather of Cadet George Fleming, spoke to 20 of our cadets on the evening of March 30 about his careers in the Air Force.  Col. Gennin served three combat tours in the F-4, flying over 700 combat flying hours, 450 combat missions in Southeast Asia, and more than 100 missions over North Vietnam.  He served as a Fighter Weapons Instructor and Fighter Pilot, an F-16 Program and Advanced Avionics Manager and Test Director, a Requirements Staff Officer, an Operations Officer and Commander, a Chief with the Asia Division out of the Pentagon, and a Vice Wing Commander.  The list of military awards earned by Col. Gennin is extensive and impressive.  His career in the Air Force has taken him all over the world, with experiences in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia.  During the seminar, Col. Gennin shared a bit about each job he performed during his years in the service.  He also shared how his experiences in the Air Force prepared him for his future work in the business world.  He is presently the President of SDS International, Inc., a company he founded.  We are grateful to Col. Gennin for volunteering his time to talk to our cadets, and we are indebted to him for his service to our country.

Our most recent “College Road Trip” was to Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, VA (http://www.hsc.edu/).  Thirteen cadets traveled with COL Feathers on March 24th to tour this scenic campus.  We currently have three students enrolled at Hampden-Sydney, and several seniors have been accepted to this college for the coming fall.  One of our graduates, Nick Dunie, Class of ’16, accompanied the group on the campus tour.  Following the tour, our cadets were presented information by the Admissions staff and then enjoyed dinner in the college’s dining hall before departing for the return to FUMA.  Our next “College Road Trip” is taking place today at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, and then we’ll be traveling to Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA on April 28th.

It was announced this morning that 93% of our seniors have now been accepted to a college or university, and most have been accepted to multiple schools.  Three of our seniors have been offered appointments to U.S. Service Academies.  Ms. Payne, our College Placement Officer, has done a great job helping our seniors and many of our postgraduates with the application process.  Many members of our faculty and staff have also been instrumental in assisting these students through counseling, editing college essays, writing recommendations, and helping with the completion of other necessary paperwork required for college admission.

Many of our juniors will be taking the ACT this coming Saturday and the SAT on May 6th.  The deadline for registering for this final SAT administration of the year is today, with April 18th being the last day for late registration.  Registration information can be found at www.collegeboard.org.

Our final PIER Club activity was held March 31.  Ten of our cadets assisted as “big brothers” and crew leaders for over thirty community children with special needs during this respite event, intended to give parents of these children some time away.  The Academy encourages all of our cadets to participate in community service, whether on or off campus, and the Guidance-sponsored PIER Club is just one venue for cadets to get involved with serving others while a cadet at Fork Union.

We look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming spring events here at the Academy, including our National Honor Society/National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony on April 14th, athletic contests throughout the next several weeks, and at our parades, which begin on Sunday, April 30th and are held every Sunday afternoon thereafter until graduation on Saturday, May 27th.  Please help us publicize our upcoming Admissions Open Houses: midweek events (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM) April 11th, 12th, and 13th and a Saturday event on April 22nd, from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM.  Information about these Open Houses can be found on our website.

Thank you for your continuing support as we head down the homestretch of the school year.
