Academic Dean Announces Updated Schedule for 7th Grade

Date:  Thursday, August 22, 2019

Fork Union Military Academy announced today that due to higher-than-expected enrollment in the 7th Grade for this school year, new teachers have been added for the 7th grade and the daily schedule has been updated.

The school's Academic Dean, COL Mike Goad, explains, "We wanted to make changes to the schedule and add to the teaching staff in order to yield the student-teacher ratio that we feel is appropriate for this age group and to provide an optimum learning environment throughout our middle school level."

The 7th grade year is divided into five grading terms. The 7th grade cadets have now been divided into two groups and will travel to two different teachers throughout the day. After terms one and two, the groups will be rearranged in order to make sure that students are not in the same class with the same fellow students throughout the year. During term five, 7th graders will take a Cultural Studies course. It is still to be determined whether or not the 7th graders will be combined into one large group during this course. This will be based on several factors, and school officials will communicate this decision closer to term 5. Likewise, one of the residual effects of the new format was an open seminar period for all 7th graders. During this open period, all 7th grade cadets will take an exploratory Spanish course. This will be a very basic language course that introduces cadets to basic vocabulary, sentence structure, and cultural customs of Spanish-speaking countries.

Below, you will find the new schedule in very general terms.

Preparing for Hurricane Dorian

Date:  Wednesday, August 28, 2019 Tags:  hurricanecrisis planhurricane dorian

Our staff and faculty at Fork Union Military Academy are staying informed of weather forecasts and we are preparing for Hurricane Dorian.

We have a Crisis Response Team and a Crisis & Emergency Operations Plan established to deal with severe weather events, natural disasters, and other hazardous circumstances or events affecting our campus. This team meets regularly to review, update, and conduct drills of our plan.

Storm Preparations

Over the past century, Fork Union Military Academy has dealt with many such storms and we are well-drilled in dealing with potentially destructive weather conditions. Fork Union is not located within a hurricane or evacuation zone and is not in a flood plain or low-lying area. The primary problems experienced on campus with such storms is the potential for loss of power due to high winds and heavy rains.

In 2003, the campus took a direct hit from the powerful Hurricane Isabel, leaving the campus without external power supply for a period of days. Life on campus continued in a remarkably normal manner, and classes continued to meet as scheduled.

If necessary, Fork Union Military Academy has a plan in place should any event require relocation of our cadets and staff. In our more than 120 years of operation, relocation has never been required.

Monitoring the Storm’s Path

As you can see from the tracking map below, Dorian will make landfall far to the south of Virginia and Tropical Storm Erin is passing well to our east over the Atlantic Ocean. At worst, Fork Union is expected only to receive additional rains and winds in the week ahead similar to those experienced with our usual powerful summer thunderstorms.

Prepared for Power Loss

The campus has onsite generators to keep electricity flowing to critical infrastructure, and maintenance staff keep a close eye on tree limbs that need to be removed and other potential hazards in advance of predicted high winds.

Jacobson Hall, our Upper School barracks, was constructed with a building generator capable of powering the entire building, with full service to the first floor and all bathroom facilities, and emergency lighting and service to the upper floors.

Larry McIlnay, Director of Food Services, has ordered in extra supplies of bottled water, canned goods, and topped off the fuel tanks for the generators.

Keep an Eye on the Campus

You can keep an eye on weather conditions on campus at any time with the Skyline Network weathercam we have mounted high atop Hatcher Hall for use by our local television stations. You can see the view looking almost due west from the top of our central administration building at https://www.cbs19news.com/weather/skyline.

Update on Hurricane Dorian

We continue to closely monitor weather forecasts as Hurricane Dorian approaches the Atlantic Coast of the United States. While predictions are that the storm may intensify and become a powerful hurricane, the models all indicate that the storm will make landfall in central Florida, which is well over 650 miles (over 1,000 km) from Fork Union Military Academy. Current rainfall forecasts published by the National Hurricane Center predict that Fork Union may not even receive additional rainfall from this storm.

Hurricane Dorian is not currently forecast to affect Fork Union Military Academy.

Fork Union Military Academy Announces Special Discounting to Help Families Displaced by Hurricane Dorian

Date:  Monday, September 9, 2019

Fork Union Military Academy has announced that it will be providing an automatic $5,000 hardship/hurricane discount for any young man who qualifies for admission to Fork Union from an area affected by Hurricane Dorian. This is in addition to any need-based financial aid for which the family might normally qualify to receive.

"Hurricane Dorian has produced terrible destruction in its wake," said Colonel David Coggins, President of Fork Union Military Academy. "There has been extensive damage to homes, schools, and infrastructure in places like the Bahamas, and some coastal areas of the southeastern United States. This creates a tremendous disruption in the lives of many families.I understand very well that at a time like this, families might be torn between the emotional need to keep their sons close versus the practical benefit of placing their sons in a better, less-disrupted environment where the young men can focus on their education and future."

"In an effort to ease the burden for families such as this," Coggins continues, "we want to do our part. Families are trying to rebuild their lives and balance the responsibilities of family, work, and moving forward against the challenges they face. We can provide a safe and structured school environment for some of those young men, and we want to do our part to help."

Fork Union Military Academy is making a limited number of spaces available for young men seeking this special hurricane-related discount. Fork Union Military Academy is an all boys, Christian, college prep boarding school in central Virginia for young men in 7th-12th grade, and postgraduates pursuing a gap-year program prior to college. Because the school follows a unique One Subject Plan curriculum, there are several entry days during the academic year and the school can accommodate mid-year enrollments more easily than most schools.

To request more information about this hurricane/hardship discount, visit our special site set up for this purpose at https://www.forkunionmilitary.org.

Cadets and staff gathered early in the morning around the flagpole at the center of Fraley Circle for prayer before class on Wednesday, September 25th, joining with thousands of students across the nation & around the world celebrating the See You At The Pole (SYATP) event.

See You at the Pole began in 1990 as a group of ten students gathering together to pray at their school. It grew as a grassroots movement until now, almost three decades later, as millions meet on their campuses around the world to pray on the fourth Wednesday in September.

Many thanks to Cadet Drew Leydig for capturing video footage of this year's event!
