Operation Valentine for Major White

Date:  Tuesday, February 11, 2020 Byline:  By Kayla Jones, Registrar / Fine Arts & Middle School Department Chair

On January 12, 2020 I came across a article about 104-year-old Marine veteran who wished for nothing but Valentine’s Day cards. Inspired by the article and moved by the Marines request I shared the article on my personal Facebook. Colonel Coggins saw my post and endorsed me moving forward with the project at Fork Union Military Academy.

On February 7, Operation Valentine went into full effect. I met with teachers CPT David Mitchell and CPT Cris Higginbotham to create a plan to share and inspire our seventh graders with this simple and touching story. After Mitchell and Higginbotham showed the news article and explained the historical importance of Maj White receiving the Purple Heart at Iwo Jima, the seventh graders met in the Academy’s art studio to spend the morning using their creativity to express their gratitude and love for this Marine Veteran. Every cadet was enamored with the project. Taking their time and making sure that each card represented their individual style, the students created cards from recycled materials and placed them along with three Fork Union Military Academy shirts in our parcel.

I am extremely blessed to be part of a school that is a family. I have immense pride in our cadets, faculty, and staff. Thank you for letting me share. Please find the link to the news article below.

Updates on Fork Union's Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic

Date:  Thursday, March 12, 2020

Update as of March 12, 2020 at 6:00 PM

The Senior/Postgraduate Dinner and Pinning Ceremony originally scheduled for Saturday, March 14th, has been cancelled completely.

Best regards,
Colonel David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.)
President
Fork Union Military Academy
Email: cogginsdl@fuma.org

Update as of March 12, 2020 at 4:00 PM

We still have no cases of the coronavirus on campus, and we are continuing to evolve and revise our response as conditions warrant and as guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other health agencies is updated.

Yesterday the World Health Organization officially labeled the current COVID-19 coronavirus update a pandemic. A pandemic is the term applied to a disease that is spreading widely in many countries around the world at the same time. The most recent outbreak termed a pandemic was the H1N1 influenza in 2009. While this definition does not really change much in the way of recommended actions to combat the spread of the virus, it does underscore the urgency in taking aggressive action to slow and ultimately stop the spread of the virus.

1. We are Closing the Campus to Outside Visitors and Cadet Trips Off Campus are Cancelled

As of today, we have postponed or cancelled all athletic contests, have cancelled or postponed all events on campus that would bring outside visitors onto our campus, and have cancelled any planned cadet trips off campus, such as for field trips.

This means that we have cancelled this weekend's Alumni Speaker Day, and the Senior/Postgraduate Dinner and Pinning Ceremony will be conducted with only our on-campus faculty and cadets. No outside visitors will be permitted to attend these events. For the time being we are suspending admissions tours on campus while our cadets are on campus.

We will also be modifying our procedures for parents picking up or dropping off cadets on campus. No outside persons will be allowed in campus buildings, including the barracks, at this time.

2. Change in Exam Schedule for Term 4

We are aware that the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Education are discussing further recommendations or mandates that may affect both public and private schools in Virginia. The decisions from these agencies are expected to be released later today. Many schools and universities in our region are already adjusting their plans and class schedules for the coming days.

In order to stay ahead of the curve, at Fork Union Military Academy we are planning to accelerate the end of our 4th grading term by giving the final exam this Friday morning, March 13th, instead of next Thursday. The final exam will only cover material which has been taught to this date. This will allow us to finalize grades and award credit earned for 4th term classes. In this way, we will be well-prepared for whatever guidance we will receive this week from those governing state agencies.

3. Spring Break

Our spring break is scheduled to begin on Thursday, March 19th, at 12:30 PM. However, we will permit cadet departures beginning this Friday, March 13th, at 12:30 PM should you wish to make such arrangements. Cadets may otherwise remain on campus as normal until their regularly scheduled departure on Thursday, March 19th.

4. Return from Spring Break has been Delayed

Our return from Spring Break was originally scheduled to be on March 29th, but we have decided to delay our cadets' return to campus until at least Monday, April 13th, at 7:00 PM. This corresponds to the end of our regularly-scheduled Easter Leave.

5. Term 5 Will Begin on Tuesday, April 14th

Our hope and expectation at this time is that cadets will return to campus and begin classes in person on April 14th. We will update you by April 7th as to whether we will conduct classes for Term 5 in person on campus or via online or distance learning.

Our teachers have made preparations to deliver their Term 5 courses through the use of online or distance learning. One advantage of our One Subject Plan is that each teacher is responsible for instructing a relatively small number of students. Because of this, our teachers can use a variety of methods and technology to deliver instruction as best meets their class' needs and the course being taught.

6. We Will Keep You Updated at 4:00 PM EDT Each Day

Each day at 4:00 PM EDT we will post any updates to the home page of our website (forkunion.com) with any changes or news regarding our response to this Coronavirus pandemic.

Our point of contact for any questions you may have is LTC Steve McCoy, our Deputy Chief of Staff and Coordinator of our Crisis Action Team. His direct phone number is 434-842-4406 and his email address is mccoys@fuma.org.

We will close with this word of prayer:

Oh God our sovereign Lord, grant us, we pray, courage, patience, safety and wisdom in these troubled days. Please protect our cadets, faculty, staff and families...our FUMA Family...from the effects of Covid-19. Bless us, oh Lord.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

OUR ADMISSIONS DEPARTMENT REMAINS OPEN

The current COVID-19 situation has called for us all to make adjustments to our ‘normal’ ways of doing things.  We are working from home, teaching and learning remotely, and staying safe by avoiding crowds.

The Fork Union Military Academy Admissions team is also adapting.  We are currently putting the finishing touches on a video campus tour, we are setting up admissions interviews using the phone, or Skype and Zoom platforms, working with families individually through any issues related to the submission of required documents, and exploring ways to create an interactive version of our Open House scheduled for April 25.

One thing that has not changed is our willingness to work with our prospective cadets and their families.  Please feel free to contact us if we may be of assistance at any phase of the admissions process.

We may be reached at 434-842-4205 or admissions@fuma.org

Fork Union Military Academy to Hold Class of 2020 Graduation Ceremony on Campus on July 18

News Type:  Parents Date:  Friday, May 8, 2020

Fork Union Military Academy announced this week that it would hold in person graduation exercises for seniors in the Class of 2020 on July 18, 2020. Founded in 1898, this will be the Academy's 121st commencement and is being planned to take place in the school's stadium where past graduations have been celebrated. School officials say that the July 18 date was chosen because it is expected to meet the schedule announced by Governor Northam for the lifting of restrictions on larger events.  Additional protocols will be shared with families as the graduation date approaches.

"We will continue to monitor the changing circumstances," said Colonel David L. Coggins, USMC (Ret.), the President of Fork Union Military Academy, "and we are developing a comprehensive plan for our graduation and our phased return to school. We are determined to have a graduation ceremony for our seniors that appropriately honors them and the completion of their high school journey. They have done very well under extraordinary circumstances and I couldn't be prouder of each one of them."
Out of an abundance of caution and its commitment to hold a traditional, in person graduation, the Academy has asked seniors and their families to also hold the weekend of July 30-August 1 in the event circumstances change.

The senior class hails from more than a dozen states and several countries. Fork Union is a college preparatory, Christian school; each member of the senior class has been accepted to at least one college.  The members of the Class of 2020 have been awarded college scholarship grants of more than $2.5 million.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused the closing of school campuses across Virginia, by order of Governor Ralph Northam. Many schools scrambled to put in place online learning alternatives. Fork Union Military Academy follows a unique curriculum plan called the One Subject Plan, in which students take just one class during each of the five grading terms of the school year. This simplified the school's conversion to distance learning for the final grading term.  Term 5 is subject to standard grading requirements, so the Valedictorian and Salutatorian will be announced after Term 5 is complete.

"Because each teacher is only teaching one class with approximately five to fifteen students," explains COL Mike Goad, Fork Union's Academic Dean, "we were able to set up distance learning in a way that was really tailored to the needs of each class. It's worked very smoothly for us. We miss having our students on campus, though, and we are looking forward to having a graduation ceremony this summer."

"Graduation from high school is a true rite of passage for our seniors," Goad continued. "Even though we had to send our students home and finish the school year with distance learning, we have been looking forward to the day when we could be together and celebrate the accomplishments of our senior class in person."

Fork Union Military Academy Takes Unprecedented Step to Give Families Flexibility for Fall Enrollment and Summer School

$

Date:  Wednesday, May 6, 2020

Fork Union Military Academy this week announced that it is giving families enrolling for the 2020-2021 academic year certain unprecedented, one-time benefits.  A family's registration fees will be completely refundable and the enrollment agreement cancelable in the event they do not enroll, for any reason, this fall so long as the Academy is notified by the stated time. In past years, the required registration fee has been non-refundable and the contract non-cancelable, but due to the uncertainties presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the school has added special provisions to its enrollment agreement to allow for the refund of registration fees and contract cancelation up to August 1, 2020.

"We recognize that the COVID-19 pandemic has created a lot of uncertainty for our families," said Colonel David L. Coggins, the school's President. "We want to reassure our families that we will work with them through this time, and protecting their financial investment by allowing the refund of their registration fees up to August 1st just seems like the right thing for us to do."

In an additional change, the school is reducing the fall enrollment registration fee for any student who successfully completes the school's summer session.

The Academy is developing comprehensive plans for dealing with COVID-19 concerns during the return to campus.  As part of those procedures, the Academy has announced that each young man will be guaranteed a single room upon request.  "We recognize that the uncertainty from COVID-19 is multi-faceted.  We want families to know that we are preparing to meet the challenge head-on," stressed Col. Coggins.

Special considerations are also being made for the planned in-person summer session for July 5-August 1, 2020.  Registration fees are refundable, and the summer contract is cancelable up to July 1 to give families the most time possible to make a decision.  Single rooms are guaranteed, and additional payment options are being made available.

"The Academy could see record summer school demand, assuming external factors permit, because of the widespread academic disruption for so many young men," suggested Fork Union's Academic Dean, COL Mike Goad. "We are doing everything we can to be there for the families that need us, whether for remedial work, to reinforce their core academic skills, or to get ahead."

Summer School and Summer Camps are cancelled for 2020

We have made the hard decision to cancel our summer school session and all summer camps for this year.

Throughout this COVID-19 pandemic, we have tried to defer our decisions for as long as possible so that we could act based on the best information available. At the same time, we have tried to prepare for events and be proactive, rather than respond to events after they occur.

Governor Ralph Northam announced this past Friday that Virginia would not begin Phase Two of the state's reopening plan until June 5th at the earliest. With this delayed start for Phase Two, any similar delay in reaching Phase Three would create insurmountable challenges in holding summer session on campus

We have reached the point where deferring the decision any longer would be unfair to our families who need to make their plans, and unfair to our faculty.

So I have decided that the schedule is simply too uncertain to proceed with plans for our summer school and summer camps.

I prefer that we be able to shift our focus to getting ready for the best and safest way to reopen in the fall.

Good News for Parents for the Fall

We are putting in place a comprehensive plan for this fall, preparing protocols, policies, and procedures to deal with COVID-19 concerns, and making necessary adjustments to our academic calendar to better safeguard our cadets and campus.

I will have more news to share with you on our fall schedule in the days ahead, but here are some important changes we are making in some of our policies that affect you.

Refundable Registration Fees

  • Registration Fees for both summer school and fall enrollment will be refundable deposits this year. If you let us know by August 1st that you will not be enrolling, for any reason, we will fully refund your registration fees.

Request Single-Occupancy Rooms

  • When you return your enrollment contract and registration fee, you may request that your cadet be given a single-occupancy room in the barracks. These requests will be honored on a first come, first served basis, based on the date received.

If you have any questions about re-enrollment concerns, please give our admissions office a call at 434-842-4205 so that we can address them individually with you.

Best regards,
